As a result, there’s a lot of chatting to get through, the majority of which isn’t voiced (if you’re the sort of person who hates movies with subtitles, you probably won’t have a great time).
After all, the point of your adventure is to learn about who and what you are, which is an objective not particularly well served by punching people. Instead, the game refreshingly wants you to talk things out. To give you an idea, once I’d completed the tutorial it was a good couple of hours or more until I ended up in a proper fight, and it was one that I voluntarily entered into. You’d expect a lot of violent confrontation along the way, but moments of direct, sustained combat in TTON are few and far between. The usual roleplaying business ensues as you amass companions, level up and embark on a bunch of quests. After quite literally being dropped into the world, you’re left to figure out what is going on. You play as the Last Castoff, the latest in a long line of discarded host bodies for a being called the Changing God. Ancient devices with often unknown properties are treasured, traded and coveted, and the world is filled with a fantastical array of mutants, interdimensional entities and robots surrounded by exotic-looking buildings and machinery. Much of their knowledge has been lost, and the remnants of incredibly advanced technology are treated pretty much like magic. In the intervening eons, various cataclysms have befallen the planet while an unknown number of civilisations have risen and fallen.
Events take place one billion years in the future, with Earth now called the Ninth World. Its setting and plot are rooted in fantasy-tinged heavy sci-fi, with a big dollop of mysticism and metaphysics thrown in. A spiritual successor to 1999’s Planescape: Torment, this RPG is a throwback to PC games of old, with story-based gameplay, an isometric perspective and deep character building mechanics.
